The Great Reimagining:
From Founder-Led to Community-Powered
Part 1 & Part 2

2022 and beyond…

Mission
Center for Purposeful Leadership is an alliance of organizations and individuals committed to examining, developing and practicing new paradigms about the nature and meaning of leadership, by advancing the Art of Convening & Purposeful Leadership, through communities of practice and transformational programs.

Vision
A Purposeful Leader in every community and organization creating thriving cultures of purpose, trust, and collaboration - in service to a world that works for all.

Values
The principles of Art of Convening are at the core of every function, our inclusion policies, and the agreements of an interdependent, collaborative structure.

Leadership does not reside in a person but in an arena that can be occupied by offerings of specific wisdom to the needs of the community. So leadership is produced collectively in the community, not the individual. The individual’s responsibility is to be ready and willing to show up, serve, and then, most importantly, stand back. Leadership for this era is not a role or a set of traits; it’s a zone of interrelational process. Step in, step out.
— Nora Bateson

On January 3rd, we will explore Collaborative Leadership rooted in Purposeful Leadership.
Join us to consider these questions of Collaborative Leadership:

Convening the Inner Life
Convening is an “inside job”. The question at heart of the matter is “Who am I?” This is an area where we can explore the inner work of convening. “The success of any intervention is dependent on the interior state of the intervener (convener)."

  • How do I stay grounded or centered when there is so much disruption?

  • How can I be more confident as a convener?

  • What are practices that can help me navigate feelings of vulnerability?

  • What does it mean to “presume positive intent while being conscious of outcomes of my actions”?

Convening Relationships
All transformation is relational. At the Heart of the Matter is, “Who am I in relationship?” Who are we called to be together? In this topic we will explore the challenges and opportunities presented in relationships.

  • How do Convening principles apply to my family life?

  • Where can I turn for help when I get stuck?

  • What are some tools to help repair ruptured relationships?

  • When do I need to be more sensitive with dynamics of power and privilege?

This will register you for both 1/3 & 1/10 sessions.
Attendance at both is not required.

Join us on January 10 to continue the conversation and consider these questions:

Convening in Organizations & Systems
Here is where The Art of Convening really shines! Designed for “the gathering and holding of people in essential conversation for the best possible outcome,” convening is a powerful tool in organizations to help generate effective and efficient co-creation and collaboration to address systemic change.

  • What are the vital signs of a healthy, thriving organization?

  • Is there integrity between the vision and mission and the culture (how they are expressed in daily life)?

  • What are the roadblocks to co-creation and collaboration?

  • Is the communication within the system generative or punitive?

Convening in the Environment
“Our relationship with the earth involves something more than pragmatic use, academic understanding, or aesthetic appreciation. A truly human intimacy with the earth and with the entire natural world is needed. Our children should be properly introduced to the world in which they live.” (Thomas Berry, “Human Presence,” in The Dream of the Earth, 13).

  • How can Convening practice help me become more intimate with the “more than human world”?

  • What practices can open my mind and heart to the gift and beauty of nature?

  • What stories from indigenous cultures can help me appreciate the Earth?

COLLABORATION: A co-creative engagement that is designed to create value and equity for each partner. To work with another person or group in order to achieve or do something, often by sharing knowledge, learning and building consensus. More than a collection of skills and expertise, a collaborative process creates a culture of discovery, co-creation and innovation. Collaboration points us to new leadership capacities and behaviors.

COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP: An emerging body of theory and leadership practice focused on the leadership skills and attributes needed to deliver results across functional and organizational boundaries, and create value and equity for each partner, often by sharing knowledge and learning, and building consensus.

The October 2021 Retreat succeeded with the contributions of many. We thank you all.
