5/10 & 5/17: Build Trust, Examine Systemic Racism:
The Role of Trust Leadership Behaviors

Vivian Jenkins Nelsen, she/her/hers. Owner, The Hypatia Group, Inc.
Co-president, Diversity Institute, Inc.; Co-founder, INTER-RACE

“To have essential conversations about systemic racism, they must be rooted in trust. Trust is the architecture of these essential conversations.”

Trust: firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Safe to bring your whole self forward.

Racism: exists when one race or color group:
- intentionally or unintentionally refuses to share power,
- distributes resources inequitably,
- maintains unresponsive institutional policies and procedures,
- imposes ethnocentric culture on any other race-color group for its supposed benefit,
- justifies its action, by blaming the other race-color group
.
-Dr. Robert Terry

Trust is critical to effective leadership at all levels and with all customers. Understanding how you developed your trust style is critical to identifying how you encourage trustworthiness in others. Leading in diverse organizations has unique trust challenges and opportunities. We will explore the building blocks of building trust, for yourself first, and then for those you work with and serve.

Objectives
1. Understanding the key elements of trust (in ourselves and others)
2. Learning how trust is vital to achieve authentic engagement
3. Reflecting on the role of trust in achieving equitable outcomes in the workplace
4. Building trust - high trust relationships - high trust organizations
5. Examine systemic racism - what is it? - where does trust fit in? - what is your role?
