Frequently Asked Questions

+ What is “Convening”?

Craig Neal, Originator and Lead Author of The Art of Convening book, believes Convening is different from facilitation. By definition, facilitation is “the process of making things easy or easier.” Conveners invite participants to co-create the highest possible outcome for a meeting or gathering.

This program offers exciting updates from life and professional experiences over the past 10 years since publication of the book in 2011, and 17 years since founding the Art of Convening trainings.

+ What is the opportunity or goal? What is working well? What barriers must be removed?

We will deepen our convening insights, with an inquiry into personal and cultural patterns, beliefs, and relationship dynamics. This program benefits the convenor, their clients or collaborators, and the groups or organizations they serve.

+ What are the outcomes?

Provide a safe space for convenors to get to their own “heart of the matter” as it relates to convening, by reflecting on their convening goals, abilities and impact.

Increase self-awareness of one’s identity as a convenor, including the ability to identify blind spots.

Deepen insights into the dynamics among the convener, the participants in groups, and organizational or community systems.

Expand the capacity for experimentation with alternative convening strategies.

For coaches, we will enhance the ability to demonstrate Core Competencies such as Embodies a Coaching Mindset, Cultivates Trust and Safety, and Maintains Presence.

We will work with these challenges and opportunities. Are you ever…

  • Uncertain of how to express “the heart of the matter”-- the core value of meeting together and involving others.

  • Blocked around how to truly align your group on what is most critical to tackle.

  • Blocked in establishing or sustaining a common purpose for your group.

  • Challenged to set and keep agreements or maintain a safe setting for participation.

  • Impatient with the time and energy required to involve others, and to listen without judgment.

  • Unable to fully tap into the talent and energy of the team or group.

  • Distracted and overwhelmed, rather than present and committed.

  • Dissatisfied with the level of commitment to action toward important objectives for your group or team.

Craig’s coaching was invaluable for establishing an ongoing collaborative of health care CEOs from Minnesota dedicated to working together to improve health care. Using “art of convening” principles, Craig helped to plan the first few meetings and establish a safe and trusted environment. By the 2nd meeting, the participants signed a pledge “to collaborate on specific and persistent problems that cannot be solved by any individual entity or solely through competition.”
— David Abelson, President, Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement
(Kim) is a very inspiring coach with the experience I felt I lacked, and she encouraged me to go deeper each time to uncover my true values and motivations to move forward. It was so helpful to be coached by Kim as she enabled me to get a real grasp of my goals and throughout the sessions and helped me focus on the more important aspects of building my practice. It’s been an amazing experience and I thank Kim for her patience and gently prodding when necessary.
— Julie Cummings-Debrot, The English Connection
Working with Craig, I had a transformative experience: In a period of my life filled with transition, fear and doubt, he helped me see that I had all the answers inside of me to take the critical, decisive steps forward and claim the life that I wanted. I appreciate his attentiveness, thoughtfulness and simple, straightforward knowledge and wisdom.
— B.A.W., Director of Economic & Housing Development, City of Newark, NJ
